程茁,香港理工大学会计金融学院副教授,于俄亥俄州立大学Fisher商学院获得博士学位。学术研究主要集中在信息技术的商业价值,社交网络,信息技术与会计金融领域的交叉课题,研究成果已发表在The Accounting Review, Management Science, Information Systems Research, Decision Support Systems, and Information Technology and Management, Internet Research, China Accounting and Finance Review等学术期刊。

活动简介:

Companies’ ability to manage cybersecurity risks affects their value, competitive edge, and reputation. Recent cybersecurity breaches not only show how costly failure can be, but also offer important lessons on discovering novel ways to improve cybersecurity management. We investigate whether executives’ and directors’ social networks with other firms—formed via current and past employment, education, and other activities such as clubs and charitable organizations—help their companies manage cybersecurity risk. Using data on reported cybersecurity breaches from 2005–2018, we find that (1) firms whose executives and directors are more socially connected have more reported breaches, suggesting their greater ability to detect and disclose breaches; (2) such firms receive a less-negative stock market response to public announcements of cybersecurity breaches and experience greater improvement in operating performance after such breaches, indicating their higher ability to respond and recover; and (3) having executives and directors with IT expertise strengthens the relationship between connectedness and cybersecurity management, in terms of reducing the likelihood of reported breaches, improving the stock market response to breach announcements, and enhancing post-breach operating performance.
